Web Site #

What?
This is the page for organizing stuff on the website

Current status #

2007-06-06 Installed drupal (open-source CMS) on /drupal, just
to play around and see what it's capable of. If anyone else also wants
to play with it, just contact me and I'll sort you out a login. Owen

2006-09-18 Plugged security hole which would've allowed guest login on SHIP to read calendar SQL and admin pwds in php files. Owen

2006-09-15 Added very basic anti-spam field to the open events booking form. Let's wait and see if that does the trick, if not we can devise something more sophisticated. Owen

2006-09-15 Added sql feature to calendar admin to aid mass deletion of spam. Owen

2005-11-21 Removed front page ad for gig *blush*. Updated resources page, as shown below.

2005-09-27 Added links to Matilda & Glasgow social centres on links page. Charlie.

2005-09-16 Put disorda gig info on front page. Charlie.

2005-07-30 Updated the links page, got all main pages WAI compliant, added a getting involved section to the about page.

2005-07-29 Yay! The new website is up. I've put a redirect on the funpic page, and everything is up and running. Time for a cup of tea :-)

2005-07-24 Right, I've ported owen's calendar over, and the new site validates as xhtml.
I still have to de-dreamweaver a few of the pages, but we're ok to go live. Comments?

2005-07-23 New version of site is underway - this is in the same style as the wiki. Check it out at:

Text from the flyer #

The resources
Office Space

There are desks for up to 5 people working at once. The office is set up for word processing, desktop publishing, image editing, web design, printing and CD burning. There is often someone to help with technical problems. There is stationery, paper and other office stuff. There are filing cabinets to store your work. Resources are bought out of your donations.

Meeting Space

There are sofas and chairs available and room for up to 20 people to meet. The room can be re-arranged to suit you. There are facilities for making hot and cold drinks. Costs are covered by donations.

Media Centre

There are computers here capable of audio and video recording and editing and also burning ?CDs and ?DVDs. Oxford Indymedia runs training sessions in making and editing short films. You can also learn to publish your own news on the web. The cost of ?CDs and other resources needs to be covered by your donations.

Other resources

There is a small library and noticeboards for events and campaigns. There are paints, brushes and other art materials you can use. Your group can receive mail here. Most importantly, though, there are loads of creative and skilled people connected to this centre. Donations keep the centre running.

Internet Access

The centre has a broadband conection and broadcasts wireless internet for anyone to pick up freely. There is a computer outside the room that can be used for internet browsing at any time.

How to use the resource centre
Bookings

Either the office space, the meeting space or the whole room can be booked, with preference going to campaigning and other progressive organising. The room is sometimes needed for weekend-long events so regular bookings on the weekend are in danger of being cancelled with notice for one-off events.

Drop-in Use

When the room isn't booked, there are often people here and you can use the room whenever it's open.

Organisation

The centre is run by autonomous working groups of volunteers who report back to a weekly meeting. To get involved, come to a meeting and join in with a working group. The meetings are on Thursdays at 7pm (in the room) and anyone is free to come along.

Costs

Costs are covered by donations. You are asked to donate for stationery, tea and coffee, CD burning and printing costs etc. and to help with rent and electricity costs. Unfunded groups are not asked to donate as much as groups with funding.

gig announcement #

Can you put the gig announcement on the front page of the website please?
These are the details:
- Saturday 1st of October
- East Oxford Community Centre, Princes St
- food from 6.30, bands from 8
- punk bands, rock bands, ?DJs
- fundraiser for costs incurred by people from round here in the G8 protests, including organising costs and fines.
- Also for Campaign Against Climate Change
- £5/£3

You can put it in any order or layout that appeals to you. Cheers :)
Paul

Charlie's development version #

Charlie is developing a slightly different version at http://theoarc.org.uk/~charlie
Reasons for changes are as follows:
  • Shrinking the size of the html that dreamweaver generates, whilst achieving the same or similar appearance (for example the new homepage is around half the size, which is good for our bandwidth as well as for people with slow internet connections)
  • Making the html easier to understand
  • Using CSS to do layout (which makes it easier to change the appearance of the whole site at the same time).
  • Shrinking the graphics where possible (eg. squirrel pic now 58k instead of 112k
  • Getting the site standards compliant - which means that it works with all browsers
  • Making the site accessible - for users with disabilities and search engines.
  • Search Engine Optimization - so we get higher placing in google/yahoo/etc (could do with some help on this!)
